The University of Washington is the only location for training allergists in the Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Alaska region. The program recently received a 5 year extension with distinction. The training of Fellows uses region-wide resources including the UW teaching Hospitals, Children’s Hospital, Madigan Army Hospital, Virginia Mason and the offices of Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center (NAAC).
All the physicians at NAAC have UW appointments and are teachers and members of fellows in training. A broad spectrum of research in asthma, rhinitis, food allergy and immune deficiency is also a part of the program.
The frequency of allergic diseases is on the increase; however, the number of physicians trained in this specialty is small and shrinking. Funding to train new specialists is limited and unfortunately, requires constant fund raising since federal, state and hospital resources are limited and inadequate.
