About NAAC

Welcome to Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center (NAAC)!

Allergies, asthma, and immune diseases can have a drastic effect on an individual’s quality of life. As the largest asthma and allergy practice in Washington state, we are dedicated to providing solutions that improve the quality of life for infants, children, and adults affected by allergy (environmental, food, medication, and insect stings), asthma, sinus disease, eczema, hives, and immune system disorders. For decades, we have been dedicated to providing individually-focused care from a team of award-winning Board certified/eligible physicians and highly trained, compassionate support staff.

We are committed to listen carefully and treat each patient with kindness, respect, and courtesy. We apply our specialized knowledge to deliver patient-centered, cost-effective care with compassion and integrity.

Our Story

Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center (NAAC), as it is known today, began as an allergy specialty clinic in 1964.

Then under the direction of C. Warren Bierman, MD, and William E. Pierson, MD, the practice first focused on serving pediatric and adolescent patients. For many years, we also enjoyed the leadership of Gail G. Shapiro, MD, who was the first woman elected to be the President of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI) and is dearly missed.

Over the years, NAAC expanded beyond pediatrics to serve patients of all ages, allowing all family members to be seen for allergy and asthma care in a single location. We continue to grow in new ways in our efforts to serve Washington’s allergy and asthma needs; today you’ll find NAAC offices across the state, including Seattle, Redmond, Everett, Renton, Issaquah,  Richland, and Yakima

The Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center (NAAC) Difference

Asthma and Allergy Expertise

Our physicians are exceptionally well-trained and have devoted an additional two to three years in fellowship beyond their training in pediatrics and/or internal medicine to further study the health issues you are facing. Our doctors have completed training to be Board Certified/Eligible by the American Board of Allergy & Immunology.  A number of our physicians also hold multiple degrees, including MD/PhD. Don’t be surprised if you catch your NAAC physician being interviewed in the local and national media. We are proud to be trusted experts in our field, and our physicians are regularly included in citywide and nationwide lists of top doctors each year.

National Leaders in Our Specialty

Whether we are serving as leaders or advisors on a number of high profile medical committees, including the two largest national allergy societies–American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI)–as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and others. The doctors at NAAC are also on the clinical faculty of the University of Washington School of Medicine and staff on Seattle Children’s Hospital and other local hospitals. NAAC is also University of Washington’s School of Medicine’s trusted partner for training its fellows in Allergy and Immunology, as well as rotating pediatric residents from Seattle Children’s Hospital.

As distinguished leaders actively engaged with the changing frontiers of our specialty, we can bring the most current best practices to our treatment of you and your family.

A Commitment to Research

NAAC is involved in clinical research through our partnership with Seattle Allergy & Asthma Research Institute [formerly ASTHMA (Associated Scientists to Help Minimize Allergy), a Nonprofit Corporation]. We have worked with the National Institute of Health (NIH), other prestigious health organizations, and pharmaceutical companies to conduct studies and promote further understanding of new treatments for asthma, allergies, hives, and other related conditions.

An Independent, Locally-Owned Organization

NAAC is a private practice, owned, and managed by the doctors themselves. In contrast to many corporate health centers, this allows us to keep best medical practices and patient care, not financial mandates, at the center of everything we do.

A Close-Knit Team That Treats Your Family Like Our Own

NAAC considers itself to be a family. From our physicians and medical support teams to office staff, many of us have been working together for decades. As we address your medical concerns, we always strive to do so in a compassionate, professional, and family-friendly environment.
